Tees 4 Change was actually creating t shirts that were designed to support positive planetary change from 2014-2017, but at that time, it was almost impossible to get good quality sustainably produced clothing printed on demand, so after a few years, I closed the store, so as not to also be contributing to the problem. This year, 2024, the store has reopened, as I have found an amazing, sustainable and ethical manufacturer and supply chain to work with.<\/p>

The Problems with the fashion industry\u2026<\/h3>

The modern fast fashion industry is shockingly harmful to our planet on so many levels! Toxic chemicals are used in the dyeing processes and dumped in the rivers; massive amounts of pesticides and insecticides are used in the production of cotton; massive amounts of fossil fuel energy (the fashion industry is responsible for 10% of the world\u2019s carbon emissions!<\/strong>!!) and water are used during the growing and manufacturing processes; synthetic fibres are derived from fossil fuels and leach micro plastics into our waterways when they are washed; animals are mistreated for their fur; and in some places workers are very poorly paid or are actually used as forced labour!<\/p>

As such, some of the best things that we can all do are:<\/p>

  • Only buy sustainably produced clothing.<\/p><\/li>

  • Recycle and re-use our clothes \u2013 buy second-hand clothing.<\/p><\/li>

  • Repair our clothes so that they last longer.<\/p><\/li>

  • Buy less.<\/p>

    Tees 4 Change is taking the following sustainable approach to design clothing that can help create postive change for you:<\/p>

    We only use sustainably produced cotton<\/h3>

    Our clothing is all made from either 100% organic cotton from India or a mix of 50% organic cotton & 50% remilled cotton.<\/p>

    Sustainably produced organic cotton is so much better for the environment as it does not harm our wildlife through the use of pesticides and insecticides, does not use excessive amounts of water or pollute the waterways.<\/p>

    The downside of the unsustainable cotton industry<\/strong> \u2013 a normally produced non-organic t shirt would require 700 gallons of water, is likely to cause water pollution when dyes are released into natural waterways, & will use excessive amounts of insecticides and pesticides. (Despite conventional cotton farming only being responsible for using 3% of the world\u2019s fertile land, it is responsible for 24% of all insecticides and 11% of all pesticides!)<\/p>

    All the clothing that our factory manufactures is designed from the start to be returned to it when it's worn out, to be remilled and re-used. This is a micro circular economy in action.<\/p>

    Remilled cotton is made from re-cycled cotton tees. If any of our products fail their quality assurance process, they are reprocessed and the fabric is remade into new products. Customers can also send back any worn-out items and they will be remade into new products. (If you are on our email list you will be told when the opportunity to send your old cotton clothes to the factory for remilling is happening. This is a circular system where approximately\u00a07.23kg<\/strong>\u00a0of CO2 and\u00a04478 litres\u00a0<\/strong>of water is saved per tee that has been remilled!<\/p>

    We also only print t-shirts when they have been ordered, so there is no waste due to creating more clothes than are required.<\/p>

    Renewable Energy<\/h3>

    The factory that the clothes are made in is powered by renewable energy in the form of solar and wind power, which keeps the manufacturing carbon footprint low.<\/p>

    Clothing manufacture all happens in the UK<\/h3>

    This reduces our transport carbon footprint and supports the local economy by providing jobs and fair wages.<\/p>

    Reducing Our Carbon Footprint<\/h3>

    Plastic reduction<\/h3>

    The majority of modern clothing is actually made from synthetic materials, derived from fossil fuels. These plastic fibres tend to deteriorate and release micro-plastics into our environment, especially every time that they are washed. Micro-plastic is now found in all of our oceans, may of our rivers and lakes, as well as in the fish that we eat. A shocking amount of this clothing is also dumped in landfill sites or burnt causing more atmospheric pollution.<\/p>

    We also have a commitment to massively reduce the amount of plastic that we use. Every order is shipped in paper packaging made from plants, to avoid using plastic bags. We do not use synthetic (plastic) material in our clothing.<\/p>
